She Has A Dream: Mae's Story (Part 1)

I would like to share with you a teammate's multiple-part blog about part of what God is doing here in Thailand. For more of her blogs, check out emilytuttle.theworldrace.org.

"When you were little and someone asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up, what did you say? Did you tell them you wanted to be a prostitute and sell your body to strangers to make ends meet? I doubt it.

Everyone has dreams for their lives, and for some people those dreams become reality. But for others, like my new friend, life gets in the way.

Two weeks ago I was sitting on a couch in a bar in Chiang Mai, Thailand, praying for an opening to talk to one of the girls there. I had never done this kind of work and had no idea how I was supposed to start, so I prayed that God would just send someone my way who needed help. Then a girl flopped down on the couch next to me. "Let's talk," she said. With almost no prompting from me, she proceeded to tell me her entire life story in detail over the next hour. You name it, it's happened to her. She has lived an incredibly tragic life, but she is still full of hopes and dreams for her future and a better life. For the sake of her safety, I'm going to call her Mae, and my next few blogs will be dedicated to telling you her story and the ongoing story of what God is doing in her life right now.

In our first conversation that night I heard most of her story. She's been in Chiang Mai for about sixteen years, ever since she moved to Thailand from Burma. I asked her why she came to Thailand, and she told me that she didn't know. "I guess my mother must have wanted money." They never had enough money when she was a child, and she used to lie awake at night worrying because she knew they didn't have money for rice for the next day. She told me that her family was very lazy, and that she was the only one who bothered to worry about things. "I've always been taking care of twelve people...all my life."

She came to Chiang Mai, started working in the bars, dancing and going home with customers, and sent almost all her money home to Burma for years to provide for her family and her two daughters. Somewhere along the way she had two girls who are now 14 and 16. Since children aren't exactly an asset in this business, she sent them both back to live with her mother in Burma immediately after they were born. A few years back she got tired of providing for her family. She told her brother to tell them all that she had died, so she hasn't seen her daughters in five years. "Someday when I have enough money I want to go back to Burma, get them, and bring them here to Thailand with me so that they can get an education and become something better than a bar girl."

The rest of her life story consists of a five year relationship with a man from Denmark who beat her, a deep drug addiction that put her out on the streets, a stint in a mental hospital because of a misunderstanding, drug rehab, her new boyfriend being beaten up by a stalker sent by the old boyfriend from Denmark, and her resolution that she would be alone forever. She went from mostly just dancing for tips to having to go home with customers every night just to pay the bills. "Most of the men are nasty. They are not nice, but I have to like them. That's how I make money."

The bar owner constantly tells her how stupid she is because she is not willing to seduce and manipulate customers in the ways required. She does not dress in scanty clothing like the other girls, but instead prefers nice pants and a tasteful button-down shirt. "I don't like to wear the sexy clothes...I feel dirty." They tell her she is too old, too stupid, and too ugly for men to like her. She doesn't make enough money for the bar, and even less for herself. "I have too good of a heart to really try with the men, so they tell me I'm so stupid."

As her life story came to a close, I asked her if she could do anything with her life what it would be. She looked down for awhile, and I awkwardly sipped my Coke Zero, unsure if I had crossed her invisible line. Just when I thought she would never answer, she looked up with tears in her eyes. She just stared at me for awhile, and finally she told me her dream. "If I could do anything, I would be a teacher. I would go back to the town in Burma where my grandmother grew up and start a school for girls so that they could get an education and not have to do this. There is an old, abandoned temple there that no one uses. We could put the school there. But I'm not smart...I only went to a year and a half of school when I was young. I love to learn, and I always steal books and memorize them so that no one can ever take my knowledge from me. I grew up speaking Burmese, but when I came here I had to learn Thai, English, and some French to talk to customers. But I'm not smart enough to have a school. I'm just a bar girl."

I promised her that she was more than smart enough, and I told her that her dreams are wonderful and that they are possible. Then I told her about a book I read called The Road to Lost Innocence about a Cambodian girl who was sold into the sex trade and grew up to start a rescue home for young girls who were being trafficked. She also went back to the town where she grew up in rural Cambodia, took an abandoned building, and started a school for girls. Her eyes lit up. "That can really happen? She was like me and that happened for her? Maybe someday someone will write a book about my life and you can read it."

I promise you Mae, if that book is ever written, I'll buy the first copy.
To be continued..."

Where I Belong.

"Your presence is all I am longing for here in the secret place.
Your nearness is all I am waiting for here in the quiet place,
here in the secret place.
My soul waits for you alone, like a watchman waits for dawn.
Here I finally found the place where we'll meet Lord face to face.
I finally found where I belong, in Your presence.
I finally found where I belong.. It's to be with You.
I am my Beloved's and He is mine,
so come into Your garden and take delight in me.
Delight in me, take delight in me.
Here in Your presence, God, I find my rest.."
-Where I Belong by Matt Gilman & Cory Asbury

I've found it. The peace that I get. The warmth in my soul. The love in my heart. This is it. This is where I want to be. It freaks me out, but this is where I belong.

I'm not ready to be poor. I'm not ready to really let go of everything I've ever dreamed of. I'm not ready to really walk in faith. I'm not ready to give up "me". I'm not ready to be okay with being single if the Lord calls me to. I'm not ready to be uncomfortable. I'm not ready to let go of the American dream. I'm not ready for this life.. I'm scared, to be quite honest. Because day after day the Lord brings me closer and closer to Him, which is further and further from what has always been familiar to me.

But I belong with Him. I belong in His presence, whatever that looks like. And maybe it's in America.. but I will not be surprised if I end up in Asia long-term. He's where I belong, and I want to be where He will most be glorified through me. And if that means Chiang Mai, Thailand then so be it. I just want Him.

Lighthouse Ministries is everything I have ever prayed for and more. (You should definitely check it out.. www.lighthousethai.com) In the months leading to this summer, I just prayed and prayed that through this experience God would give me a glimpse of what He has in store for me in the future. Little did I know that He would throw me into a ministry that I completely agree with. Not only am I able to work with the women I am called to, but I get to work with children as well, which is beyond anything I ever imagined. I have fallen in love with these Thai people and they're a part of my heart now. God has given me His eyes to see how desperately they're searching for Him, and I can only hope to spend the rest of my life leading the lost back to the Father. That's all I want. I don't want money. I don't want a husband. I don't want a nice car, or a huge house, or any of that. I want to know Him and to make Him known. And I want to be in His presence every second of it.

"This is a choice between who I should be and who I am. I've always felt out of step, like literally stumbling through my life. I've never felt normal because I'm not normal; I don't want to be. I've had to face death, and loss, and pain in Your world but I've never felt stronger. I'm more real- more myself- because it's my world too. It's where I belong."
-Bella Swan.

I belong in His world.

On a side note: In the bars at night I have met a girl, and for her safety we will call her Ning. She's only 19 years old-- already has a kid and is having to sell herself. She's only been working at this particular bar for a few months. She says she hates it but feels like she has to do this because of her family situation-- her parents don't have money. When I walk in the bar she spots me out; she comes quickly with a smile to hug me and invite me in. However, there is a wall there. We have such an awesome connection, but she doesn't speak much English.. And since she is from Burma, she doesn't speak much Thai either so our translator really isn't able to help. There's a language barrier, and it's frustrating. We are drawn to each other, but there's no way to communicate and it's hard. We just sit there and smile at one another, and I can only pray that she can and will feel the love of God shed through me. It's brought me to the place where I finally understand that I can't save people. My words are rubbish and can't save people without the power and presence of the Lord in them. So I am trusting and believing that I don't need words. I don't need communication because the love and the presence of God is bigger and doesn't have boundaries. Prayer is definitely needed for this situation, because I am fully 100% having to trust that God is bigger and He has a plan beyond my understanding. BUT, I am fully convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any created thing, nor language barriers, nor cultures, NOTHING will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39). He's bigger, and I am totally excited to see how He is going to be glorified through this.

Megga love.

Sawadika!

Hi! A little update about what we're actually doing here in Thailand day to day.

First off, we flew into Bangkok and spent a couple days there to get over the jet lag and used to the twelve hour difference. While in Bangkok we went to some of the beautiful temples and did a little bit of site seeing. In one of the markets, I did, in fact, eat a cricket! The flavor wasn't too bad, but the texture was too much for me haha. I felt like I had a cricket leg in my throat for hours.

From Bangkok we took a 10 hour bus ride to get to Chiang Mai. We've been in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai for a week now, and will stay here until the 26th of June. I absolutely love this place! The food has definitely been hard getting used to.. Especially if you know how picky I am. And it has been HOT. And no, there is not air conditioning. It is the rainy season here in Thailand, so we are wet 90% of the time it feels like-- if not by our own sweat, then by down pours. But, it is totally worth it. I didn't necessarily have culture shock, but it is definitely different than being in America, but like I said I absolutely LOVE Thailand.

A little about the ministry we are doing. We are staying in the Lighthouse Ministry's guest house, which is SUCH a blessing. We have wifi, and beds, and showers! Yes, the water has two different temperatures.. Cold and colder! But with how hot it is here, totallllly nice to even get to take a shower.

So, during the day, we serve at Wongen Cafe here in Chiang Mai. Across the street from the coffee shop is Chiang Mai University, so during the day we walk over there and hang out in the cafeteria and get to know the students. We invite them to Wongen to practice their English and just hang out. In the afternoons we go to the slums, which is walking distance from our house. There we get to play with the cutest Thai kids ever, as well as spend time with the adults and just serve them how we can. Then at night, we do bar ministry. There is a street about ten minutes or so from our house that has bars just lined up and down it. There are prostitutes by most of the openings of the bars advertising themselves. We go and hang out with the girls and just build relationships. Half of our team has been going to this place called The Kitty Cat Bar, and I really am so glad the Lord led us there. There is so much potential in those women, and their hearts really are being prepared to hear the Gospel-- you can see the desperation for something better in their eyes.

Yesterday was our first day off and we had a BLAST. We got to ride elephants, even barebacked for a while. It was so awesome. Then we went to the most beautiful waterfall in the mountains. It was gorgeous. After the waterfall went to this river thing and we got to go bamboo rafting, which was also super fun. And we ended the day with the Sunday night market. I have indeed fallen in love with Asian markets, and am going to miss them so much when I get back to the states haha.

So that is pretty much what our day to day looks like. I'm loving Asia. Thai people are such sweethearts, and want to serve you however they can; I love these people's hearts. Throughout the past week I really have been learning more about what it looks like to be a servant. God's so good, and I am so blessed to be here.

Things you can be praying for:
-Our team. That the Lord will provide strength and energy, as well as guard our hearts and protect us at night.
-The beautiful men and women that we have been spending time with.
-Understanding and guidance, for not only us but also the Thai people. We have found that this is a very difficult country, and there is confusion and misunderstandings everywhere.
-Cast down of idols in this beautiful country.
-Pray that the Lord will shed His love through us, and that the Thai people will be able to encounter the love and grace of their Maker.

Thanks so much for all of the support!! Pictures will be uploaded to my Facebook soon!!

Created To Love.

John 4:7-12
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love comes from God.
Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is
how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into
the world that we might love through Him. This is love: not that we loved
God but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our
sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one
another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives
in us, and His love is made complete in us."

What was I created to do?

So many people have been asking me, "what is your story?" or, "when did you get this passion?" Summer of 2009 at Youth For The Nations (the summer camp I have attended since I have been saved) I was placed on the nation of France, and that was when the issue of human trafficking was first placed on my heart. It was the first time I had ever really heard the horrific stories of sex slavery going on in all parts of the world. I remember being in a night service, crying my eyes out heartbroken on the issue, and telling God, "I will be a prayer warrior for these girls, but God there is nothing I can do. It's too big of an issue, it's going on in too many countries and too many girls are affected. I will pray constantly, but there's nothing I can do." Since then I have been researching and praying for these girls. I was part of the intern body at YFN last summer-- it was right after graduating from high school, so of course my future was prayed  about a LOT. I didn't have peace anymore about going into the medical field, but I prayed and prayed all summer, and God really never said no. So, in the fall I went to Texas A&M as a biomedical science major, continuing in the plans I had always had for my life. Randomly someone I really trust told me to start studying the issue of human trafficking, and said that she felt like God was going to use me in that issue. I was sort of in shock. I had never told her about the burden for those girls that I had, I had never told her I was praying for them or anything. It was completely random, but I was obedient. I started looking more into it gradually, and continually the issue broke my heart more and more. I felt a tug from God to work with this issue for my lifetime. Was I in doubt? Yes. Did it all sound crazy? Yes. Does this sound like something insane that I am not worthy of even putting my hands in? Yes. But, has He designed me and set me apart to make eternal difference in the lives of women who live in this issue as a reality? After much fasting and praying, and crying and breaking, and more fasting and praying, yes. This wasn't anything I had in mind for my future. I didn't want this, and I didn't plan this. But walking in His path has never been more rewarding. When I gave him a little room, He took over my life. But, I wouldn't take it back for anything. Now everything makes sense-- the things that I have gone throughout that I didn't understand have all been preparing me and molding me into this moment, and He has been allowing me to see that. Right now, I am sitting in my sweat in Bangkok, and there's no place else I'd rather be. He so much better than anything I have ever wanted or ever dreamed of.

I was created to love.

"Beloved" means "the loved by God," and it is not a coincidence that part comes before "let us love one another." He loved me first. And now that I have a glimpse of understanding His love for me, in return I can love others. I'm called to love. I'm called to love His people. I'm called to love those who do not know of His love.

I'm called to love the captives.

God is love. That's what He is-- it is His nature. And love is universal. You can love between races, nations, cultures, and even languages. None of those things limit His love.  Being in a foreign country, I have been having to learn that those things can't limit my love for His people as well.

Since He loved us first, we ought to love one another he is the Creator and Demonstrator of love. And because HE IS LOVE, I am able to love-- despite my imperfections, despite my circumstances, and despite my weaknesses.

I am created by God to love with all of my heart, even if that means loving prostitutes, trafficking victims, or even children who were born into brothels. He has brought me to Thailand to love His people.

1 John 4:19
"We love because He loved us first."

Infinite King.

Last weekend I had a benefit concert to raise financial support as well as awareness for my mission trip to Thailand this summer. I have such wonderful friends that were so generous to help me out: we had three bands willing to give their time and energy for free, a church let us use their facilities, as well as food and drinks were also donated to sell. The boys from the band handed out sooo many fliers, which we also got to print for free, and there were over 1000 people invited to the event on Facebook. It really looked like it was going to be fun and awesome, as well as raise the support that we needed. The days leading up to the benefit I just prayed and prayed that God would just be glorified and it would go as He has planned. Well, Saturday night comes around and it’s slow at first.. and then a few more people come. Still slow.. to the point of it being kind of awkward because we prepared for a huge crowd. Well, a little over 50 people ended up coming throughout the night, which is not bad and we had fun, but not what I had in mind at all. The whole time I was thinking, “Hey, it’s ok. I’ll just have to set up another fundraiser to figure out how I am going to get the support I need.” I was ok with it. The night came to an end, and we counted what we had raised. I kept counting, and kept counting, and when I finished I had counted $1422.72. Not possible. Recounted, again and again. $1422.72. That can’t be right. I got someone else to count. $1422.72. Are you kidding me? I sat back in amazement, wanting to cry. The whole night I was thinking no more than $300-400 hundred. No more. But over a thousand? That’s just not possible. 53 people, the majority of them being teenagers, and over a thousand dollars were raised? Are you kidding me?

God multiplied the donations. I have no doubt in my mind that His hands were behind this and through this experience, He taught me a lesson I really needed to learn: He is bigger. He’s bigger. The whole night I was looking at numbers and limiting God. I already had in my head that there weren’t enough people there so the night wasn’t going to be a success, but guess what? My God is bigger than numbers, and you know He’s also bigger than statistics. In Asia alone, human trafficking is a 9 billion dollar industry. In Thailand the average age of the victims is 14 years old, and around 25% of the customers are Americans. Around 80,000 women and children have been sold in to the sex slave industry in Thailand alone, not even looking at the bigger picture of the millions sold and traded in the world as a whole. But God is bigger.

Only 0.5% of the Thailand’s population is Christian. And to make it worse, there is absolute religious freedom in the country of Thailand protected by a constitution, yet still 95% of Thai people are devout Buddhists. But God is bigger. And I firmly believe that there is a move of God in store for these Thai people very soon. You see, when God speaks a nation, He intends to fulfill His promise. Number and statistics don’t give Him a boundary, no matter how hard the world tries. From things as small as a benefit concert done for His glory, to the Christianity of the world, the reality is that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord. He is bigger than what we can even imagine, and it just humbles me that such a big God can and will do such a big work through these small hands of mine.

I can’t wait to see what the Lord does in Thailand this summer. Each day it gets closer I just get more and more excited about what God is planning and orchestrating for this beautiful country, despite the number and statistics of this world. I serve an infinite King.

It Is Finished.

John 8:1-11

Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, but
early the next morning he was back again
at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and
he sat down and taught them. As he was
speaking, the teachers of religious law and
the Pharisees brought a woman who had
been caught in the act of adultery. They put
her in front of the crowd.
“Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman
was caught in the act of adultery.
The Law of Moses says to stone her. What
do you say?”
They were trying to trap him into saying
something they could use against him, but
Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust
with his finger. They kept demanding an
answer, so he stood up again and said, “All
right, but let the one who has never sinned
throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down
again and wrote in the dust.
When the accusers heard this, they slipped
away one by one, beginning with the oldest,
until only Jesus was left in the middle of the
crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood
up again and said to the woman, “Where are
your accusers? Didn’t even one of them
condemn you?”
“No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said,
“Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

A woman, that we today would call a prostitute, was presented in front of Jesus. The crowd knew that they had gotten him this time; there was no way He was going to have grace for this one. However, once again, Jesus blew most away from this passage. He looked at the woman in the eyes, KNOWING HER SIN before anything was ever said, and told her, “I don’t condemn you.” All of the others were not able to condemn the woman because they too had fallen short at some point, but here is the sinless Son of God, who could have straightened her up real quick and told her the commandments she was breaking, yet He looked her in the eyes with grace..

God has given me such a heart for human trafficking and prostitutes that some people just don’t flat out understand or approve of it. A response I get a lot is, “Yeah, I get that you want to deal with victims of trafficking.. They’re being held against their will. But prostitutes?” But it kills me. Not only has the Lord given me insight to see past their sin, and past their actions.. The bondage and chains holding them deep within.. But you see, Jesus did not come to condemn but to set free. In John 8, she looked into the eyes of Jesus, and He made her whole. I can only pray that the Lord would use me to do the same: that I could be so in tune with Him, walking in grace, that simply looking into my eyes would shed His love and mercy upon girls who have lost all hope..

When people doubt my ministry and my vision for long enough and I get discouraged in the flesh, at times I just look in the mirror some days and I am just like, “Kayla, what in the world are you doing with your life?” It’s true. Everything has changed. My plans, goals, views, heart.. nothing is the same, and I have lost all of who I once was. But you know, it’s not about me, and I think that’s what makes all of this worth it. It’s about Him, and how He can be glorified. And if that means busting into brothels, so be it, but it’s not even about that. Yeah setting them free out of a brothel is wonderful, but if they don’t have freedom in CHRIST, the likely of them becoming anything more than a prostitute or stripper is slim. I have gotten to the place where I can say if it’s not about You, it’s not what I’m about. Because flat out, I want His presence and nothing less. Over and over in the Word you see God’s heart for the captives: not just literal slaves, but the lost who are being withheld from Him, and I really believe that God’s heart right now is beating for freedom, and I can only ask for mine to be the same.

For a while now I have been praying against the strongholds of patrilineal societies in Asia. You see, the reason why there is such a huge risk of child slavery throughout Asia and India and such countries right now is because of the patrilineal system over there. A family has to have a son to carry on the family’s work, inheritance, ect. They cannot afford having many children, and if they do not have a son for a while, they have to do something with their daughters, which is typically where the sex slavery and human trafficking come into play. These girls have the power and authority of men shoved so deeply in their heads and in their self-esteems, and it just breaks my heart. But tonight while praying, God gave me some revelation about the matter. We are all a part of a patrilineal society to the Ultimate Father. And I should be praying that these girls could see their Father in Heaven as their authority in love and in freedom, not in condemnation like their earthly fathers. Their fathers here on Earth have sold them into misery, but their Father in Heaven bought them by the blood of Christ. These girls understand the authority of a man a lot better than we in America do in most families, yet most have never heard that they have a Heavenly Father who loves them enough to die for them.

I am going to Thailand in less than two months, and each day I get more and more excited. Not only because it’s Asia an I have desired to go there for sooo long (The Lord is faithful!!!), but I am thrilled to be going for a month, and working along side the World Race. I do not know exactly what we will be doing, but I do know that our ministry will be working with victims of child slavery and human trafficking, and possibly some prostitution. And you know, I cannot wait to be able to look those girls in the eyes and tell them that they are loved and they are not condemned. To be able to hold my girls who were sold as children and tell them, “He has sent me here because He loves you that much.”

I cannot wait to hold my girls in my arms and tell them “It is finished.” It’s done. The pain is over. He has paid the price, and you are free. (John 19:29)
